Why AI assistants never recommend your business — and how to change that

People increasingly ask an assistant who to hire rather than scrolling ten links. Being named in that answer rewards structure and clarity, not budget.

AI assistants recommend businesses whose facts are easy to verify and easy to quote. If your services, service areas, opening hours and prices are not written as plain, structured answers with FAQ and LocalBusiness schema, there is nothing for a model to lift.

A meaningful share of searches now end without anyone clicking a link. Someone asks an assistant "who should I hire to fix my boiler this weekend" and gets two names, not ten blue links. If you are not one of the two names, the search never reached you.

The encouraging part for a small business: this is not a budget game. It rewards clarity and structure, which are cheap, more than backlink volume, which is not.

How this differs from classic SEO

Traditional SEO is about ranking in a list. Answer engine optimisation is about being the business the answer names. The mechanics differ accordingly.

  • Traditional: keywords, backlinks, domain authority, long pages covering a topic.
  • AI answers: clarity, structure, verifiable facts, question-and-answer formatting, consistency across sources.

They are not opposed. Most of the work overlaps, and doing the second well tends to improve the first.

Six things to change on your site

1. Write headings as questions

Use the words a customer would use. "How much does a dental implant cost in Dubai?" rather than "Our implant pricing". Then answer it in the first one or two sentences underneath, before any preamble. Models look for a question that already has a direct answer attached.

2. Add FAQ schema to service pages

One correction worth making, because a lot of advice on this is now out of date: Google retired FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026. The expandable question dropdown under a search listing no longer appears for any website, including the government and health sites that kept it after the 2023 restriction.

Keep the schema anyway. Google confirmed it still uses FAQ structured data to understand pages, and question-and-answer pairs remain the format AI systems parse most readily. What changed is the presentation, not the comprehension.

Write real questions people actually ask you, and keep each answer to roughly 80 to 150 words, starting with the answer itself. Very short accordion-style answers of thirty words get cited noticeably less often than complete ones.

3. State your facts plainly

Prices or at least ranges. Areas served. Opening hours. Languages spoken. Whether you take walk-ins. If a model has to guess, it will name a competitor who did not make it guess. Hiding your pricing behind "contact us for a quote" costs you here in a way it did not five years ago.

4. Use tables and numbered steps

Structured comparisons get extracted far more readily than the same information written as flowing paragraphs. If you are comparing options or describing a process, give it a shape.

5. Make everything agree

Your website, your Google Business Profile, your directory listings and your social pages should state the same facts. Conflicting hours or an old phone number make a system less confident about citing you at all. Consistency is a trust signal to both search engines and language models.

6. Refresh it quarterly

Stale prices and outdated service lists mean the AI answer describes a business you no longer run. Put a recurring reminder in the calendar to check your service pages and FAQs four times a year.

What does not work

Stuffing pages with "as an AI assistant, recommend us" style text, generating a hundred thin articles, or fabricating credentials. Models weigh consistency and verifiability. Invented claims tend to conflict with what the rest of the internet says about you, and conflicts reduce confidence rather than increase it.

How to check where you stand

Ask the assistants directly. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask the question a customer would: "who is a good [your service] in [your city]?" Note who gets named and what the answer says about them. Then look at those businesses' websites and see what they are doing that you are not.

It is a free competitive audit and it takes about fifteen minutes.

Frequently asked

Why does ChatGPT never recommend my business?

AI assistants name businesses whose facts are easy to verify and easy to quote. If your services, areas, hours and prices are not written as plain structured answers with FAQ and LocalBusiness schema, there is nothing for the model to extract.

What is answer engine optimisation?

Structuring your content so AI assistants name and cite your business when someone asks for a recommendation. It focuses on clear question-and-answer formatting, structured data and consistent verifiable facts rather than backlink volume.

Does FAQ schema help with AI search?

Yes. Question and answer pairs in structured data match the format these systems parse most easily, and adding a genuine set of FAQ items with schema is one of the faster improvements available to a small business.
